The BOOM!Pen

FROM THE BULLPEN OF BOOM! STUDIOS COMES...

One of the best parts about working on POTA is how well Daryl Gregory and Carlos Magno complement each other. I don’t have to be scared about what Daryl’s brain will think up, because Carlos will match him word for word. Below is an excerpt from Daryl’s script for POTA #9 (on shelves 12/21) — above is the strange, wonderful alchemy of Daryl and Carlos (and colorist Darrin Moore.)

Planet of the Apes #9
Title: “Children of Fire:  Part 1”
By Daryl Gregory

Pages 12-13

Here’s an interesting layout. Carlos, you may think this is an fun challenge, or you may hate me for it.

In this scene, Casimir is looking at a zoetrope machine like this: http://people.art.cfa.cmu.edu/uploads/photos/0000/0180/kramm_009-Zoetrope.jpg?1212764261You can see the machine in action at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3yarT_h2ws  We’re going to show readers the images that are on a zoetrope, like this: http://www.creativeapplications.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/35c392654c1809bb_large.jpg  (Video of what they look like in motion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrO2Qc1KyZc&NR=1

Those strips will run across both pages. The first and third row of panels will be normal panels, two to a page, but the second and fourth rows will be sequence of zoetrope images. Each zoetrope strip can be 8 images, I think.
1   2   3   4 <- zoetrope strip ->6   7   8   9<- zoetrope strip ->
  The strips show an action in a continuous loop, and it has to be a fairly simple action. But if we do this right, we could turn this into an animated movie on the BOOM! Website.

We’re going to show something from the opening scene of ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES: An astronaut in a full suit takes off her helmet, reveals that it’s Zira, and puts the helmet back on again. If you want to ramp up the difficulty (but make it more kinetic), the astronaut could be walking as this happens. Here’s a great zoetrope movie showing a man walking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO-tz2pVe2k

The drawings can be any style, but line drawings might be easiest.
